<blurb>On the first day of Christmas, the Santa Barbara News Press gave us Eggnog cookies by Christina Gumpert, owner of HotCookie.com in Santa Barbara.</blurb>

Reprinted from the Santa Barbara News Press

Christina Gumpert, owner of HotCookie.com in Santa Barbara

Miss Gumpert, 36, doesn't just drink eggnog; she eats it. A customer suggested this cookie this year and now she is selling it online.
As for what to drink with it? Coffee. Eggnog, she says, would be to much. It's rich enough on it's own: "You can't really eat dessert and drink eggnog."

#imagebox#

Eggnog cookies

1 cup Butter, 1 ½ cups Sugar, ½ cup Eggnog, 2 teaspoons Vanilla Extract, 1 Egg, 2 ½ cups Flour, 1 teaspoon Baking Powder, 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon,
1 teaspoon Nutmeg

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Cream butter and sugar with a mixer. Add eggnog, vanilla and egg. Beat until smooth. Add flour, baking powder,
cinnamon, and nutmeg and beat at low speed until dry ingredients are moistened. Measure out desired size, roll into ball, then flatten slightly
on baking sheet. Sprinkle slightly with nutmeg before baking. Bake for 12 minutes checking by the minute after until bottoms are slightly browned.
(Different oven times vary, sometimes greatly). Transfer to cool flat surface. After cooled, spread on icing and sprinkle lightly with nutmeg.

   Yield: about 3 dozen.

Eggnog Icing:
3 cups Powdered Sugar, ¼ cup Softened Butter, 1/3 cup Eggnog (or more, depending on desired consistency), 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract

In a mixer bowl, beat powdered sugar and butter until well blended. Gradually beat in eggnog and vanilla and beat until icing is smooth.
    Yield: about 1 ½ cups.

#large_image:10#

Christina Gumpert, the owner of Hot Cookie, shows off a gift platter she packaged in her new Mesa storefront.

Article reprinted from Noozhawk.com.

By Lara Cooper, Noozhawk Staff Writer | Published on 06.30.2009

Hot Cookie specializes in packaged gifts and party favors, sold online and now at a Mesa storefront

That’s Christina Gumpert’s motto, a statement never more evident than when you step through the door of her new Mesa storefront, Hot Cookie.

The small-business owner is watching over a hulk of a mixer combining 12 cups of butter and 12 cups of sugar, ingredients that will make an army of butter cookies later in the afternoon.

Since the Internet lacks an application that can translate olfactory sensations, you’ll have to imagine how heavenly the batter smells wafting out the store’s open front door. People stop in to grab a cookie or two, and Gumpert offers an after-school special of a cookie and milk for students, or adults, who wander in.

But Gumpert’s main business plan has always been selling the cookies as gifts, packaging them by the dozen in paper and ribbons, and having them delivered.

#medium_image:11#

“It’s a great business thank you, instead of flowers, which could be kind of weird in some cases,” she laughed. “They get the cookies and they share them with the office.”

Hot Cookie’s new storefront at 2018 Cliff Drive opened in late January, although Gumpert has been selling the treats online since 2004. “It got busier and busier and busier,” she said, and knew she needed to make the transition to her own space from a rental kitchen.

“I always knew I wanted to own my own business,” she said. “I just didn’t know what it would be.”

Gumpert has a knack for desserts, borne out of the fact that her mom would never let her make dinner growing up, but would put her in charge of desserts for her family.

Cookies seemed like a natural choice. Gumpert said she’s constantly adding new flavors to her classic lineup of cookies, which include butter, peanut butter chocolate chip, oatmeal chocolate chip, peanut butter, chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin.

#medium_image:12#

She’s also been known to work up batches of brownies, lemon bars, seven-layer bars and caramel apples during the summer.

Christmas and Valentine’s Day are big sellers, and she and one other employee work together to fill orders.

People do come in to buy individual cookies, but Hot Cookie gets most of its business from online orders, and delivers for $10 anywhere from Goleta to Carpinteria. It also ships all over the United States.

“It’s more of a gift-giving experience,” she said.

She packages it that way, too. “I try to make it really cute and handmade and heartfelt,” she said. She also does cookies for weddings and themed parties, “where I can be creative,” she said.

In 2004, she started HotCookie.com, an Internet company with a heart and a sense of good taste. From the site, you could order cookies and have them sent around the world or down your block, and if you ordered for someone who was close, Gumpert would probably make the delivery herself. Now those who hunger for her famous butter cookie or a peanut butter chocolate chip can buy them at her recently opened retail store at 2018 Cliff Dr. (564-2397).

“I’m glad I was able to start online and establish a customer and wholesale base,” Gumpert said about opening the store. “I have a great staff, and I am in a great and very supportive town, so I am pretty positive.” The new store also features new and somewhat unusual baked goodies, starting with an agave-sweetened vegan cookie, orange almond biscotti, a brownie cookie, a lemon ginger, a trail mix, a snickerdoodle, all in addition to the original varieties. Not that HotCookie.com will stop there, for Gumpert claimed, “We are in the process of adding a Stevia-sweetened cookie and a gluten-free cookie!”

And delis. And markets. And coffee shops. It's part of my “job.” A few months ago I started to notice that a lot the places I visit served cookies. Not long after that discovery I had a new revelation: most of these desserts are made by the same company: Hotcookie.com. While munching on one of these tasty treats at a downtown restaurant recently I asked the owner about Hotcookie.com and he quickly praised them. He said he loves them, the public loves them and that the lady who sells them is wonderful.

Santa Barbara resident Christina Gumpert (founder of the company) migrated to Santa Barbara from Sun Valley, California and decided to start a business that sells instant happiness. Why cookies? "Because you can't eat flowers," Gumpert says. To guarantee freshness of their cookies, they bake them the same day they're ordered. Cookies are hand delivered for Santa Barbara residents and sent via USPS for all other orders. In the near future Hotcookie.com will be opening a storefront at 2018 Cliff Drive on the Mesa, next to Albertsons. For more information call 564-2397 or visit (of course) hotcookie.com.

John Dickson’s column appears every Tuesday in the Daily Sound.
When creating your guest list, there will always be those few who live so far away, yet they make sure they are there to share your special day. Being the busy bride you are, wouldn't it be nice to show them how much you appreciate them coming. Unfortunately, you’re a little short on time with the wedding so near. Good news, why don’t you give them a warm welcome with homemade cookies. The best part is all you have to do is pick the phone up, thanks to Hot Cookies (805- 564- 2397). Homemade cookies in different varieties like peanut butter, oatmeal raisin, and chocolate chip will be delivered straight to their hotel room. Leave it to Christina Gumpert to do the work. A dozen gift box cost $22.50 and you can even arrange party favors for reception. Christina says cookies are better because, “You can’t Eat Flowers!”
